Two-point microrheology of inhomogeneous soft materials.
We demonstrate a novel method for measuring the microrheology of soft viscoelastic media, based on cross correlating the thermal motion of pairs of embedded tracer particles. The method does not depend on the exact nature of the coupling between the tracers and the medium, and yields accurate rheological data for highly inhomogeneous materials. We demonstrate the accuracy of this method with a ...
متن کاملOptical Microrheology of Soft Complex Materials
Dynamic multiple light scattering (diffusing wave spectroscopy, DWS) has been used to study the viscoelastic properties of soft materials. Several new multiple scattering approaches were implemented to extend the range of application of this optical microrheology technique. Taking advantage of the recently developed “two-cell technique” we show how DWS can be used to investigate the properties ...
متن کاملTwo-point microrheology and the electrostatic analogy.
The recent experiments of Crocker et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 888 (2000)] suggest that microrheological measurements obtained from the correlated fluctuations of widely-separated probe particles determine the rheological properties of soft, complex materials more accurately than do the more traditional particle autocorrelations. This presents an interesting problem in viscoelastic dynamics. We...
متن کاملTwo-Point Microrheology of Phase-Separated Domains in Lipid Bilayers.
Though the importance of membrane fluidity for cellular function has been well established for decades, methods for measuring lipid bilayer viscosity remain challenging to devise and implement. Recently, approaches based on characterizing the Brownian dynamics of individual tracers such as colloidal particles or lipid domains have provided insights into bilayer viscosity. For fluids in general,...
متن کاملColloidal dynamics in polymer solutions: optical two-point microrheology measurements.
We present an extension of the two-point optical microrheology technique introduced by Crocker et al. [J. C. Crocker, M. T. Valentine, E. R. Weeks, T. Gisler, P. D. Kaplan, A. G. Yodh and D. A.Weitz, Phys. Rev. Lett., 2000, 85, 888] to high frequencies. The correlated fluctuations of two probe spheres held by a pair of optical tweezers within a viscoelastic medium are determined using optical i...
